What is your attitude towards leisure? Does the word evoke joy or is it triggering(Leisure and rest? Who has time for that?!) Do you think luxurious holidays, travelling overseas or is it as simple as reading a book whilst listening to your favourite music?
John Wesley (an English Theologian & Evangelist who led the Methodist revival movement in the church of England in the 1700’s) said as a young man: “Leisure and I have parted company. I am resolved to be busy till I die.” He was indeed busy till he died. He only ceased to work when he ceased to live.
Could John Wesley’s opposition to leisure be mistaken? If anybody feels that that is a severe judgment on a great man, let us look at the greatest example of all. It was Jesus who said to his disciples: “Come with me by yourselves toa quiet place and get some rest” Mark 6:31. In the ebb and flow of life, work and leisure both have a place.
