The Spirit of God and sharing the good news today go hand in hand. Everyone struggles at some point with how to encourage, challenge or reach out to another with this good news that Jesus is Lord and Saviour. The prophets faced the same challenge: those who would not listen to God’s message, and like now, millions who reject the truth about God (Isa 53:1-6).
The struggle to share Jesus to all who have gone astray is always our reality, so what shall keep us from despair? As we continue through our restoration series going through Nehemiah, I hope we are growing our understanding of God’s perspective on things. It is too easy to view things from our human perspective when it comes to doing this great work, which God has called us to partner in with him.
Nehemiah and his team finished the wall of the City of God in fifty-two days which was a massive achievement. It would be easy for anyone who has done great things for God and his people to put their feet up, relax, take it slow and let the good times roll. Not so with Nehemiah, for God had placed something greater than just building a wall on his heart. This was only the start of something greater to come, which was welcoming the lost sheep home to a dwelling place with God himself.
Without God we are lost, our purpose is a wandering planet in a solar system without a sun to shed a source of light which gives life. In fact, God alone is the reason and motivation behind sharing the truth and therefore, the Christian is one of continual growing in the knowledge, love and trust of him. Moreover, the overflow of this is the work of the Spirit of God within us spurring, convicting and motivating our conscience and hearts to do this great work of inviting lost exiles home.
Therefore, “we” the Church together are the workers in God’s mission of inviting the lost in the communities around us. Where do start? Gathering for public assembly is a vital part which expresses the activity of God’s Spirit at work. God’s Word calls us to practice in our gatherings as a demonstration of holding fast to this hope we profess, consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds, and encourage one another (Heb 10:22-25). Who is God by his Spirit encouraging you help welcome home? This is the ordinary way God is rebuilding his Kingdom. So let’s be prepared to welcome home those who are lost, to our gatherings at CPC Surry Hills.
