Pastoral Letter 22nd May 2022

Pastor Steaven Cheung

‘Rend your heart and not your garments’ - Joel 2:13

I have the honour and privilege to serve in formal ministry, and therefore get a front row seat to see God’s work amongst the hearts of His people. In my position as a pastor, I’ve noticed the difference between those that are overcome by their dysfunction, and those that are able to grow despite their sin.’

It’s simply this, ‘heart work saves us the hard work’. Disciples of Christ who work on their heart issues like pride, compassion, humility and vulnerability are much better equipped to deal with adversity in relationships, work and marriage. The reason being is that those that have done the work on their heart to grow it to be more Christlike, are less distracted by their impulses in challenging circumstances. It is like practicing your fundamentals in badminton, it allows you to be flexible while you play.

Scripture affirms that in Galatians, when Paul writes about the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) where a mature spirit is not at all about the physical things, but heart things.

I think sometimes we get distracted by only looking at the physical and we confuse ourselves. We think we’re spiritually healthy because we serve in church, lead a bible study or are liked by others. But those things are not necessarily indicators you’ve done the heart work.

This Sunday, let’s be encouraged to turn to God with not simply our physical presence, but with our hearts fully attended to the Lord.

“你們要撕裂心腸,而不是撕裂衣服”——約珥書 2:13

聖經在加拉太書中確認了這一點,當保羅寫到聖靈的果子時(加拉太書 5:22-23),成熟的靈完全不是關於肉體上的事,而是關於內心的事。
